High-Performance Electro-Optic Devices

Lithium Niobate is a material with a wide-range of applications in optical and microwave technologies. One of its unique property is the large second-order susceptibility (30pm/V). This allows one to use LN build up efficient electro-optical devices. Our recent breakthrough in the thin-film lithium niobate leads to a variety of high-performance electro-optic (EO) devices.

EO modulator [Cheng Wang, et al. Nature 562, 101 (2018)]: We demonstrate electro-optic modulators with high bandwidth (>100 GHz), CMOS-compatible voltages, and low-loss, which allows data rates up to 210 gigabits per second.

EO frequency shifter and beam splitter [Yaowen Hu, et al. Nature 599, 587 (2021)]: We demonstrate electro-optic frequency shifters and beam splitters with high efficiency (90%), high shift ratio (>99%), high frequency (up to 30 GHz), and low loss. We also show cascaded frequency shifters which allows one to shift the frequency of light 120 GHz using only a continous and single-tone microwave at 30 GHz.
